Casual and surprisingly cool, the Finnish capital acts as a great pit stop to start your Euro adventure, especially if you’re looking for a glimpse into Scandinavian life. With an emphasis on old encounters, Helsinki has a strong design focus today, but can maintain and celebrate architectural history that has withstanded the test of time.
Once in the hands of the Swedish people and later in the Russian Empire, the Finnish capital retains its own identity with German architecture and its own identity (city was primarily designed by Karl Engel). The Helsinki cafe scene slowly appears and is gaining popularity. Though not as advanced as other Scandinavian cities, the few hipster haunts I found were truly innovative and unique.
Outdoor entertainment was at best seasonal, and visiting in the spring still meant a lot of time! Hot chocolate is a must.

The city’s charm is primarily controlled by churches of various beliefs. Apart from Helsinki Cathedral, check out uspenski Cathedral and the “Rock Church.”
